The E231 series, actively operating on the Joban Line, debuted in 2002 as a replacement for the 103 series. The fleet consists of 10-car and 5-car formations and operates as the longest 15-car formation among E231 series commuter trains. The train body features a blue-green stripe, aligned with its line color, and an additional uguisu color stripe to prevent boarding mistakes with the local line. Alongside the E531 series for medium-distance trains, the E231 series serves on the Joban Rapid Line between Ueno and Toride, as well as the Narita Line from Abiko to Narita. After the Ueno-Tokyo Line inauguration in 2015, its operations expanded to include access to Shinagawa.
