- These sets were created when series 3000 Green cars from Takasaki Depot were reconfigured, producing 10-car fixed formations that wore the yellow and blue Boso livery and replaced some series 113 sets at Makuhari Depot.
- The trains served the Boso area for seven years before being transferred to Nagano Depot when series 209 trains were introduced.
- In the year following service start, nine of the fourteen sets received an added PS35 single-arm pantograph on Ku MOHA 211 cars to improve current collection, creating a distinctive appearance with two different pantograph shapes.
