Series OHA 35 represents one of the iconic prewar JNR passenger car types. More than 2,000 cars were produced, making this series the most numerous in Japan’s passenger car history. Introduced in 1938, early cars featured clerestory-and-arched roofs, 1.0 meter wide passenger windows, TR23 type bogies and a welded-heavy structure. Production paused in 1942 and resumed after the war with material shortages and new construction methods leading to a distinct postwar form. During production the TR23 plain-bearing bogies were upgraded domestically to TR34 roller-bearing bogies. Examples were widely distributed nationwide and used on services from express to local trains.
