The series OHA 35 is one of the representative prewar JNR passenger coach types, with over 2,000 production units and the largest number of passenger cars in Japan. Introduced in 1938, the series featured gabled and rounded roof variants, 1.0 meter wide passenger windows, TR23 bogies, and a construction that made extensive use of welding. Prewar production ended in 1942, but manufacturing resumed after the war. Due to material shortages and evolving construction methods, a distinct postwar form emerged that can be classified as the "postwar type." Later production saw the replacement of the TR23 plain-bearing bogies with domestically produced roller-bearing TR34 bogies. The Oha 35 series was widely allocated across the country and used on everything from express to local services.
