The E500 series is the first Japanese-made electric locomotive in Taiwan. A total of 88 units were ordered to replace the aging E1000 electric multiple units that haul the PP Tze-Chiang Limited Express, as well as conventional locomotives used for passenger and freight services. Manufactured with advanced technology from Toshiba’s Fuchu facility, the E500 features a straight-line exterior thanks to its modular design, and is equipped with numerous jumper connections on the front to enable coupling with various passenger and freight cars. It debuted as the next-generation locomotive for Taiwan Railways.

The Tze-Chiang Limited Express is Taiwan Railways’ all-reserved-seat express service. The PP Tze-Chiang Limited Express, introduced in 1996 with the E1000 EMUs, consists of South African-made locomotives (powered units) sandwiched between Korean- and Taiwanese-made passenger cars. The “PP” in its name stands for push-pull operation, which allows the train to be operated from either end. Typically, the train runs with 12 cars. Some cars have been updated to meet passenger needs, such as “family cars” with free space for children and pregnant passengers (converted from former half-dining cars), or cars with a sales preparation room converted into a nursing room.

The E500 series is gradually replacing the E1000 locomotives, and PP Tze-Chiang services operated by E500 locomotives with passenger coaches are now running throughout Taiwan.
