Type E500: Taiwan’s first Japanese-made electric locomotive
The type E500 is the first Japanese-manufactured electric locomotive to operate in Taiwan. Introduced to replace aging electric locomotives that haul the PP Tze-Chiang Express and other passenger and freight trains, a total of 88 units were ordered to modernize Taiwan Railways. Built with manufacturing technology from Toshiba Fuchu, the E500 features a modular design, a straight-lined exterior, and multiple jumper sockets on the front for coupling with a variety of passenger and freight cars.
About the PP Tze-Chiang Express
Tze-Chiang is the all-reserved-seat limited express service of Taiwan Railways. The PP Tze-Chiang Express operates in push-pull configuration, with traction units at both ends and passenger cars between them. The PP formation introduced in 1996 used E1000 EMUs and included passenger cars from Korea and Taiwan. A typical formation runs with 12 cars and includes updated cars such as the parent-child car (converted from a former dining car) with free space for families and pregnant passengers, and other cars converted to include nursing rooms. Replacement of older locomotives with the type E500 is underway across Taiwan.
