The 787 Series "36 Plus 3" is the 12th installment of JR Kyushu's D&S (Design & Story) trains, having gone through a transformation to begin operations in October 2020. This train embarks on a counterclockwise tour across the seven prefectures of Kyushu from Thursday to Monday, functioning as a sightseeing express where passengers can board according to the operational section of the day.
During the redesign, both the interior and exterior were completely revamped. The exterior, distinct from the traditional 787 Series image, features a lustrous black paint with gold embellishments. The value is placed on the overall onboard experience rather than just the view from the window. Characteristics include woodgrain interiors and extensive use of shoji screens on the windows. Notably, a buffet returns for the first time in 17 years on the 787 Series, offering beverages, light snacks, souvenirs, and merchandise.
The "36 Plus 3," a tourist express circling Kyushu in five days, makes its debut as a travel-themed N-gauge model. It serves as a recommended keepsake for international tourists and a nostalgic reminder for domestic users. This popular sightseeing train, launched in October 2020, travels across Kyushu in five days, presenting opportunities to encounter various train models along the way. You can enjoy it alongside regional train products such as the 813 Series 2200 slated for release in July 2025 and the 885 Series (2nd Car) "Around the Kyushu" set to hit the market in August the same year.
