Overview
- The E721 series was introduced in 2007 for the Sendai depot refurbishment and for service on the Sendai Airport Access Line.
- Designed for regional lines with low platforms, it features a low-floor body with small-diameter wheels and barrier-free, step-free doorways.
- In addition to the earlier 0 and 500 subseries two-car sets, a fixed four-car 1000 subseries appeared in 2016. Including third-sector vehicles built by the same manufacturers and based on the same basic design, the series offers many variations.
Key features and option parts
- Recreates the P4-6 set from the Sendai Rolling Stock Center; bogies and underfloor equipment are gray, obstacle deflectors are reproduced in blue-gray.
- Accurate stripe color variation for 0 and 1000 subseries reproduced: 0 subseries green, white, and red; 1000 subseries green, white, and pink. Body numbers, depot markings, and car number plates are pre-printed.
- Reproduces differing passenger window sizes opposite the toilet depending on subseries.
- Head and tail lights illuminate with an off switch. Each car’s headlight uses four lamps.
- Newly created round-pipe PS109 pantograph.
- Bogies are DT72 and TR256 for low-floor vehicles, fitted with small-diameter wheels (φ5.2 mm) as on the real train. Realistic axle spacing of 2,100 mm reproduced. Snowplow attached.
- Lead cars equipped with dummy couplers with coupler covers.
- Lead car couplers compatible with the 701 series. Intermediate connections use body-mount close couplers (hookless).
- Obstacle deflectors show different inspection hatch positions on KUMOHA E721 and KUHA E720, and the presence or absence of inspection hatches varies by subseries.
- Front destination display set to Sendai installed. Exchangeable front displays included: Shin-Shirakawa and blank. Destination display stickers included.
