The H5 series debuted in 2016 as JR Hokkaido's first Shinkansen and is based on the JR East E5 series with some changes to its interior and exterior. While the basic appearance and color are similar to the E5 series, it features a lavender-colored stripe called "Ayaka Purple" and a symbolic mark inspired by Hokkaido and the Peregrine Falcon on five of its cars. Like the E5 series, it is active on the Hayabusa service connecting Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.
