The Series E4 Shinkansen first entered service in 1994 as an all double-decker high-speed train following the Series E1. Normally formed as 8-car sets and operated as 16-car formations by coupling two sets, it also ran coupled with the Series E3 Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa. After the introduction of the Series E5, E4 operation focused on the Joetsu Shinkansen. In 2014 the exterior band color was changed from yellow to pink.
