14-series seating coaches were introduced in 1972 as passenger coaches offering equipment comparable to limited express cars, including simple reclining seats and heat-absorbing glass in passenger windows. They saw wide use on special limited express services, group charter trains, and express trains, mainly across Honshu and Kyushu.
