The 14 series seating cars were introduced in 1972 as passenger coaches offering equipment comparable to express-type rolling stock, including simple reclining seats and heat-absorbing glass in the passenger windows. These cars were widely used on special limited express services, group charter trains, and rapid/express services, mainly on Honshu and Kyushu.
