The ED75 is a standard AC electric locomotive introduced by Japan National Railways in 1963. It serves both passenger and freight purposes, offering towing power comparable to D-type DC electric locomotives. The 700 series, consisting of 91 units, was produced between 1971 and designed for the electrification of the Akita to Aomori section of the Ou Main Line. Given its operation along the Japan Sea coastline, the locomotive features a streamlined roof design to house high-voltage equipment for protection against salt damage, cold, and snow, including a lower-framed cross pantograph that minimizes snow accumulation.
