The 289 series is a limited express DC electric multiple unit created by converting 683 series 2000 subseries trains that had been used on the "Shirasagi" to replace the older 381 series previously assigned to limited express services such as Kuroshio, Kounotori, Kinosaki and Hashidate. Conversion removed AC equipment from the roof and some equipment from the center underframe, and the Green car was changed to a half-compartment layout with an altered window arrangement. 289 series sets used on Kounotori and Kinosaki operate as 4-car and 3-car sets and can be combined into formations up to 7 cars.
