The 787 Series "36 Plus 3" train, part of JR Kyushu's 12th D&S (Design & Story) series, began operation in October 2020 after the transformation of one set of the 787 series. It operates in a counterclockwise route around the seven prefectures of Kyushu from Thursday to Monday. This sightseeing express train allows passengers to board from different operational sections each day. The train's interior and exterior were redesigned, featuring a glossy black paint with gold decorations, a departure from the traditional image of the 787 series. The train prioritizes the value of the riding experience itself over the view from the window, using elements like shoji screens and wooden textures throughout the Green Car seats. For the first time in 17 years, a buffet has returned to the 787 series, offering beverages, snacks, souvenirs, and merchandise.
