The Series 683-4000 used on the Thunderbird limited express is a group of fixed 9-car trainsets built from 2009 to 2011. Unlike the Series 681 and Series 683-0, these sets feature front end gangway doors on both cab cars (the KURO 683 was prepared for this feature) and a single-arm pantograph, giving them a distinctive appearance. An offset collision protection structure is adopted for improved safety and can be seen on the end faces. A renewal in 2015 updated the exterior from the previous gray-based design to a black and blue color scheme.
