Seires 227-500 began operation in July 2023 in the Okayama area as the successor to the former JNR-type trains that had been in service there. Its exterior design is based on the concept of "Hōon no Irodori", which symbolizes abundance and tranquility, reflecting the rich and mild climate and natural features of Okayama and Bingo. The symbolic color of the train is pink, representing notable landmarks along the railway, including Okayama’s peaches, Fukuyama’s roses, and Onomichi’s cherry blossoms. The train operates not only on the Sanyō Main Line (between Mihara and Himeji) but also across a wide area, including the Seto Ōhashi Line, Uno Minato Line, and Hakubi Line.
