The series 24 sleeper limited express Hokutosei debuted in 1988 with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel, connecting Honshu and Hokkaido and operating between Ueno and Sapporo. Celebrated for hotel like onboard service, it ran up to three round trips at its peak. The passenger cars used on the Hokutosei included many variants and interior arrangements. Among them, the series Oha25-500 appeared as four JR East lobby cars between 1988 and 1989, featuring a shooting star exterior motif and onboard amenities such as a lobby area, shower room, and vending machines that contributed to the train s luxury image.
