JR West high speed limited express trains connecting the Hokuriku region with Kansai and Chukyo are represented by the Thunderbird from Osaka and Kyoto and the Shirasagi from Nagoya. Even after the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension shortened some routes, these services remain very popular. The Shirasagi operates from Nagoya via Maibara to Tsuruga; before the extension it ran through to Kanazawa. The current 681 series used on Shirasagi were reassigned in 2015 from Thunderbird and Hakutaka services when the Hokuriku Shinkansen reached Kanazawa, and these sets received various modifications resulting in multiple interior and exterior variations.
