The series 103 began mass production in 1964 and more than 3,400 cars were built over more than 20 years. This standard JR commuter DC electric multiple unit operated on DC lines across Japan and appeared in many variations depending on production period and the lines served. It remains a familiar commuter train for many fans and the general public.
