The express "HAKKODA" is a passenger express train connecting Ueno and Aomori via the Tohoku Main Line. It debuted in 1961, and from the 1970s to the 1980s, it was one of the first night trains to depart Ueno Station at around 7 PM, facilitating convenient connections to the Seikan Ferry from Aomori to Hokkaido.
After departing Ueno, the train would arrive at Wakkanai, Abashiri, and Obihiro by the following day. This service was particularly loved by young travelers known as the "KANI clan," recognizable by their large backpacks.
During the midnight section between Sendai and Aomori, sleeping cars were added to accommodate passengers, and the train made frequent stops in cities within the Tohoku region as an express service.
