Description

The Series 14 Seating Car first appeared in 1972 as a passenger coach equipped with features comparable to limited express cars, such as simple reclining seats and heat absorbing glass in the passenger windows. From 1968 onward, the development of high speed train networks connecting Shinkansen stations and regional cities advanced, and timetable revisions raised the status of many rapid services to limited express, increasing demand for higher grade coaches. While Series 12 coaches were sometimes used on limited express services, their equipment was inferior for limited express use, leading to the birth of the Series 14 seating car. These cars saw wide use nationwide except on Shikoku, operating on special limited expresses, charter group trains, and rapid services.
