The Tokyu series 5000 family was built to the Japan Railway Technical Center guidelines for commuter and suburban EMU standard specifications to reduce new construction costs through standardization. Developed jointly by JR East and Tokyu Car, it is Tokyu’s standard design based on the series E231 with Tokyu original elements added throughout.
The series 5050 entered service on the Toyoko Line in 2004. Today, through five-company through services see 8-car 5050 sets operating widely, from Motomachi-Chukagai on the Minatomirai Line to Shiki on the Tobu Tojo Line and Hanno on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line.
