The series 883 was introduced in 1995 to speed up and improve services on the Nippō Main Line. It was JR Kyushu's first pendulum type train and Japan's first AC pendulum train used in regular service. The front design varies by production year. From 2005 the fleet underwent renewal work and was unified in a deep metallic blue livery. In 2025, to celebrate the 30th anniversary, the first set AO-1 received a commemorative wrap and operated for a limited period.
