Series 883 introduced in 1995 to speed up services and improve customer experience on the Nippō Main Line. It was JR Kyushu’s first tilting train and Japan’s first AC tilting train in commercial service. The front end styling varies by production year. From 2005 the fleet underwent renewal work and was unified in a dark metallic blue livery. In 2025 the 30th anniversary was celebrated with a commemorative wrap applied to the first set AO-1 for a limited period.
