The series E657 debuted in 2011 as a limited express AC/DC electric train for the JR Joban Line and remains a mainstay on the route. For the 2023 Ibaraki Destination Campaign the series E657received a revival paint inspired by the classic series E653 "Fresh Hitachi," attracting attention from rail fans along the line and beyond.
