- KIHA52 is a powerful variant of the standard KIHA20 diesel railcar, equipped with two engines and introduced in 1958. While based on the KIHA20 design, the body was extended to a total length of 21.3 m to accommodate the second engine, and it has one additional two-tier window section between the passenger doors compared with the KIHA20. It served local lines nationwide for regional transport and was especially used on routes with steep gradients. After the transition to JR, the type continued in service with various operators but was gradually retired as successor models replaced it.
