Type KIHA52 is a powerful diesel multiple unit developed from the type KIHA20 with two engines, introduced in 1958. Sharing many structural features with the KIHA20, the KIHA52 has an extended overall length of 21.3 m to accommodate the two engines and includes one additional two-step window between the passenger doors compared with the KIHA20. It was widely used on regional local lines and was especially relied on for routes with steep gradients. The fleet continued in service after the JR transition and was later replaced gradually by successor models.
