The KIHA 52 series is a powerful general-purpose diesel railcar based on the KIHA 20 series, introduced in 1958 (Showa 33). To accommodate two engines, the body was extended to 21.3 m, and it features one additional two-tier side window between the passenger doors compared with the KIHA 20. These units served local lines across Japan for regional transport and were especially relied on for routes with steep gradients. After the transition to JR, many were inherited by various companies and continued in service before being gradually replaced by successor trains.
