KIHA52 is a powerful general purpose diesel railcar introduced in 1958. Based on the KIHA20 design, it was lengthened to 21.3 m to accommodate two engines and features one additional two tier window section between passenger doors compared with the KIHA20. It was widely used on local lines across Japan, especially on routes with steep gradients. After the transition to JR, the type continued in service under successor companies before being gradually replaced by newer vehicles.
