Series 731 is a JR Hokkaido commuter AC electric train introduced in 1997. It features a slightly longer stainless steel body than typical 21 m three-door commuter cars and an all-long-seat interior with no end vestibules, a first for Hokkaido. In recent years, single-arm pantographs were fitted, automatic gangway devices were removed, and major onboard equipment was updated.
Series KIHA201 is a JR Hokkaido commuter diesel multiple unit introduced in 1997. Built as three-car sets including a non-driving intermediate car, each powered car carries two 450 ps engines enabling a top speed of 130 km/h. The set was equipped with a body tilt system to improve curve performance, though the tilt system is no longer in use. Both the series 731 and series KIHA201 can operate together in coordinated multiple working. While the series 731 does not have a tilt system, it shares a similar narrowed upper body cross section with the series KIHA201.
Service routes
- Series 731: Otaru – Sapporo – Takikawa (Hakodate Main Line), Sapporo – New Chitose Airport – Tomakomai (Chitose Line / Muroran Main Line), Sapporo – Hokkaido Medical University (formerly Sassho Line / JR Gakuentoshi Line). The series 731 also operated on the Ishikari Liner in recent years.
- Series KIHA201: Rankoshi – Otaru – Sapporo – Iwamizawa (Hakodate Main Line). Between Otaru and Sapporo, the series 731 and series KIHA201 have performed coordinated multiple working.
