The series KIHA201 diesel multiple unit and the series 731 electric multiple unit are commuter trains introduced by JR Hokkaido in 1997. This product reproduces these two unique types that still operate in multiple-unit coupling between diesel and electric traction, a rare practice in Japan.
Features of the real trains
- Series KIHA201: Introduced in 1997 as a commuter DMU. Formed as three-car sets including a non-driving intermediate car, combining an EMU-like three-car style with powerful traction: one car carries two 450 PS engines enabling a top speed of 130 km/h. Originally equipped with a body tilt system to improve curve performance (tilt system currently not in use).
- Series 731: Introduced in 1997 as a commuter AC EMU. Stainless steel bodies slightly longer than typical 21 m three-door commuter cars, with a vestibule-free all-longitudinal seating interior unique for Hokkaido at the time. Recently updated with single-arm pantographs, removal of automatic gangway couplers, and replacement of major onboard equipment.
- Compatibility: Both series 731 and KIHA201 are capable of coordinated multiple working and share a similarly narrowed upper body cross section. The series 731 does not have the tilt equipment.
Lines and operations represented
- Series 731: Otaru – Sapporo – Takikawa (Hakodate Main Line), Sapporo – New Chitose Airport / Tomakomai (Chitose Line / Muroran Main Line), Sapporo – Hokkaido Medical University (Sassho Line / JR Gakuen Toshi Line). The series 731 was also used in Ishikari Liner services in recent years.
- Series KIHA201: Rankoshi – Otaru – Sapporo – Iwamizawa (Hakodate Main Line). Series KIHA201 and 731 operate coupled services between Otaru and Sapporo.
