This work is one of a series of paintings by Vincent van Gogh depicting sunflowers in a vase, which he painted frequently during his stay in Arles. The thickly layered paint, applied to express overflowing vitality and robustness, creates a sculptural sense of three-dimensionality.
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890)
One of the most famous Dutch painters of the late Impressionist period. He produced numerous works characterized by strong, rough, somewhat elongated brushstrokes that emphasize the texture of the paint, and vivid colors that make extensive use of the paint's natural hues.
