The third Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruiser, Prinz Eugen, was commissioned in August 1940 as an enlarged and improved version of the first and second Hipper-class ships.
It was a lucky ship that survived numerous naval battles, including Operation Rheinübung in the following year and Operation Cerberus, the breakthrough of the English Channel in 1942, and was the ship that saw the end of the war.
