The LCAC-1 class air cushion landing craft (Landing Craft Air Cushion, commonly known as LCAC) is a landing craft using a hovercraft developed and operated in the United States. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force procured six of them between 1993 (Heisei 5) and 2000 (Heisei 12) to be used on the transport ship "Osumi".
The LCAC's hull is made of light metal and has a full rubber skirt around the bottom of the hull. The main engine is equipped with two lift fans for floating and two gas turbines for propulsion, and it navigates using a controllable pitch propeller and a swivel thruster at the stern. It has a loading capacity of about 50 tons, and can transport one Type 10, Type 90, or Type 74 tank, or four armored cars or large trucks. The crew consists of five people: the captain, engineer, navigator, deck engineer, and loadmaster.
Initially, it was used as an onboard vessel for the "Osumi"-class transport ship, but in April 2004, it was upgraded to a Self-Defense Force vessel type and named the "1st" air cushion boat. It is part of the 1st Air Cushion Boat Squadron, which is made up of three "Osumi"-class transport ships. In July 2016, the 1st Transport Squadron was transferred from the Escort Fleet to the Minesweeping Group, and in October 2020, it became part of the newly formed Amphibious Warfare and Mine Warfare Tactical Support Squadron (Amphibious Warfare and Mine Warfare Tactical Support Squadron).
