The Kagero class destroyers were the largest destroyers of their time, built without restrictions from naval disarmament treaties. The eighth ship, Yukikaze, was commissioned in January 1940 and survived numerous naval battles, including the Marianas campaign and the Battle off Leyte Gulf, earning a reputation as a lucky ship.
