The DDG-171 "Hatakaze" is a third-generation missile escort ship of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, completed in March 1986.
A defining feature was the relocation of the Mk.13 missile launcher from the rear to the bow and the implementation of bulwarks to protect them from waves. The rear deck was also equipped to operate helicopters, enhancing its anti-submarine capabilities.
It served actively on the front lines until the Aegis ship "Maya" was commissioned in March 2020, after which it was reclassified as a training vessel (TV-3520). It was part of the 1st Training Squadron at the Kure base, participated in training voyages both domestically and internationally, and was decommissioned in March 2025.
