JS Shimakaze DDG-172 was completed in March 1988 as a third generation missile destroyer of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Improved from the preceding Tachikaze class, Shimakaze features a relocated Mk.13 missile launcher on the bow with a protective bulwark, an aft helicopter deck for embarked helicopter operations, and enhanced anti-submarine warfare capability. Reclassified as the training ship TV-3521 in 2021, Shimakaze has been assigned to the 1st Training Squadron at Kure Naval Base and remained in service as of January 2026.
