The series KIHA40 is a general type diesel car developed to replace the aging series KIHA10, which debuted in 1977. With single and dual driver cabs that can be operated individually, variants were designed for cold and warm regions, with or without toilets, leading to the production of 888 units. These operated mainly on non-electrified lines across the country.
Around 1980, these vehicles were deployed to the Hakodate Depot, running on the Hakodate Main Line, Esashi Line, Matsumae Line, and Setana Line. Despite the closure and conversion of lines to third-sector management reducing operational scope, the Hakodate KIHA40 continued to support transportation until the last scheduled service on the Hakodate Main Line between Hakodate and Oshamanbe ended on March 15, 2025.
On the final day of operation, the first morning train to Mori from Hakodate, which was the only three-car composition in the Hakodate area, featured the 1806 in JR Hokkaido colors, the 1801 with a distinctive modified obstacle deflector, and the "Harvest of the Southern Sea" 1809, all of which had served the Hakodate area for many years. After the conclusion of KIHA40 operations in Hakodate, the 1809 transferred to Tomakomai Depot and is now active on the Hidaka Main Line.
