The KIHA 183 series is a limited express diesel car that appeared in 1979 as a successor to the KIHA 82 series located in Hokkaido, and the leading shape that does not penetrate the high cab was characterized by a flat slant shape.Mass-produced cars appeared in 1981, and were active in each limited express train in Hokkaido.
