The JNR-style bonnet electric train, 489 Series Express "Noto," was converted to an electric train in 1993 after the takeover of JR. It was operated using 489 Series AC/DC limited express electric trains from JR West's Kanazawa Depot (now the Kanazawa General Rolling Stock Center). Initially, it ran via the Shinetsu Line. However, with the opening of the Nagano Shinkansen in 1997, the Shinetsu Main Line's Yokokawa-Karuizawa section was discontinued, and the service was rerouted via the Joetsu Line. It served as a regular service until 2010. After the end of regular service, it was used as a substitute for the Hakutaka, but was scrapped in 2012.
Currently, the lead car, Kuha 489-501, is preserved at Doihara Bonnet Park in Komatsu City, and Kuha 489-1 is on display at the Kyoto Railway Museum.
KATO's latest work accurately recreates the final appearance of the bonnet 489 Series, synonymous with JNR limited express trains.
