The JR Freight Test Paint Scheme ED76 locomotive emerged shortly after the transition to JR in 1988. It marked a shift from the previous single red No.2 color to a distinctive blue gradient with a white stripe. All eight units were stationed at Moji Locomotive Depot and were actively operational, mainly hauling freight trains across the Kyushu region and also pulling passenger trains, including Blue Trains. Notably, it gained attention when it hauled the Orient Express '88, which was visiting Japan at the time. All units remained in service until 1992, when they reverted to the original single red No.2 paint after comprehensive inspections.
