Description

ED16 is a classic Japanese electric locomotive introduced in 1931 (Showa 6). Eighteen units were built as a domestically produced compact medium-sized standard class and initially served on mountain electrified lines such as the Sasago Tunnel on the Chuo Line and the Shimizu Tunnel on the Joetsu Line. After World War II, units were assigned to the Ome Line, Itsukaichi Line, and Nambu Line (Tachikawa Depot) and later the Hanwa Line (Otori Depot). Around 1965 (Showa 40) all 18 units were consolidated at Tachikawa Depot and used on dedicated limestone freight trains connecting Okutama and the Keihin industrial area. Because the Ome Line had a lower track classification, the class’s relatively light axle load allowed long-term operation. The ED16 finished service with a farewell run in 1983 (Showa 58).
