How to Prepare Traditional Matcha (Japanese Green Tea)

Ingredient Amount
Matcha powder 2 g (about 1 tsp)
Hot water 60–70 ml
Water temperature 70–80°C (158–176°F)
Equipment
Matcha bowl (chawan)
Bamboo whisk (chasen)
Tea scoop or teaspoon (chashaku)
Fine sieve (optional)
Instructions
1. Warm the Bowl
Pour hot water into the matcha bowl.
Swirl the water around to warm the bowl.
Discard the water and dry the bowl.
2. Add the Matcha
Sift 2 g (1 tsp) of matcha powder into the bowl to remove any lumps.
3. Add Hot Water
Pour 60–70 ml of hot water (70–80°C / 158–176°F) into the bowl.
4. Whisk
Hold the bowl steady.
Using a bamboo whisk, whisk rapidly in a W or M motion.
Continue for about 15–20 seconds until a fine layer of foam forms on the surface.
5. Serve
Enjoy immediately while warm.
Matcha Latte Version
Ingredients
Ingredient Amount
Matcha powder 2 g (1 tsp)
Hot water 30 ml
Milk (dairy or plant-based) 180–200 ml
Sweetener (optional) 1–2 tsp
Instructions
Sift matcha into a cup.
Add 30 ml hot water.
Whisk until smooth.
Heat and froth the milk.
Pour the milk over the matcha.
Add sweetener if desired and serve.
