The Type 89 was Japan’s first standard-issue tank. Originally fitted with a gasoline engine, certain vehicles were converted to an air-cooled diesel engine to eliminate the need for cooling water, improve fuel economy, and reduce the risk of fires from fuel leaks during continental operations. The diesel-converted variant is known as the Otsu type, while the original gasoline version is known as the Ko type.
