The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was Germany's first all-metal, single-seat fighter and served as a main frontline fighter from the Spanish Civil War through the end of World War II. More than 33,000 examples of the Bf 109 were produced across all variants, making it one of the most widely built fighters in history.

The F-4 variant features the new DB 601E engine and a strengthened 20 mm engine-mounted cannon firing through the propeller shaft. Considered the definitive F-series type, the F-4 produced many ace pilots and represents an important development in the Bf 109 family.
