The DD51 type that was enrolled in JR Hokkaido was changed to a blue painting with a gold star mark in line with the start of operation of the sleeper limited express "Hokutosei". It was active mainly in towing passenger trains such as "Hokutosei", but retired in 2016 due to the abolition of the sleeper limited express "Cassiopeia" and the express "Hamanasu".
