The KiHa 40 series 2000 subtype is a warm-climate train mainly used in western Japan and features two-stage sliding unit windows.
History
- JR Shikoku inherited 11 KiHa 40 series 2000-series cars from Japanese National Railways (JNR).
- In 1988, air conditioning was installed on all KiHa 40 series cars.
- In 1989, the toilets were removed and replaced with regular side windows. Rooftop water tanks were also removed.
- By 1990, all trains were assigned to the Tokushima Depot, and they are still in service today as of July 2026.
High Grade (HG) specifications
- Accurately reproduces the train with the rooftop water tank removed while retaining the low roof section; newly manufactured parts.
- Reproduces the vehicle with the toilet removed and replaced by a regular window; side doors fitted with metal fasteners; newly manufactured parts.
- Reproduces the skirt with a shallower slope, a characteristic of later models.
- Reproduces the interior change with half converted to longitudinal bench seats.
- Seats reproduced in a reddish color.
- H-rubber reproduced in black.
- Shoe sills and door rails printed in silver.
- Car number and JR mark selectable; transfer sheets included.
- Jumper cables reproduced three-dimensionally as separate parts.
- Destination sign selectable from four types, including shutter-type and slit-type displays in different sizes.
- Front destination display is interchangeable; a pre-printed Tokushima part is installed and interchangeable front display parts for Naruto, Takamatsu, Kuwano, and Hikida are included.
- Headlights, taillights, and front display equipped with a constant lighting circuit board and an ON-OFF switch.
- Headlights, taillights, and front display illuminated by white LEDs.
- Headlights produce a color close to incandescent light through a color prism.
- TN coupler (SP) is standard equipment.
- Gray bogie frames and silver wheels used.
- Flywheel-equipped motor and M-13 motor used.
