The KIHA 40 series 2000 subtype is a warm-climate train mainly intended for western Japan and is equipped with two-stage sliding unit windows.
Overview
The KIHA 40 series 2000 cars were inherited by JR Shikoku from Japanese National Railways. In 1988 air conditioning was installed on all KIHA 40 cars. In 1989 the onboard toilets were removed and regular side windows were fitted in the former toilet area, and the rooftop water tanks were removed. By 1990 all trains were assigned to the Tokushima Depot and continue in service as of July 2026.
