The KIHA 47 0-series was designed for warmer climates in western Japan and featured two-stage sliding unit windows. JR Shikoku inherited 19 KIHA 47 0 cars and 13 KIHA 47 1000 cars from Japanese National Railways. In 1988 all KIHA 40 series cars were modified to add air conditioning. KIHA 47 trains were based at the Tokushima and Matsuyama depots; Matsuyama depot trains were retired by 2016. As of July 2026 some 0-series cars remain at the Tokushima depot operating alongside KIHA 40 series trains.
